7th and 8th grade Bible
This week for Bible we will be looking at the first few chapters of Matthew. We will examine the early life of Jesus and the beginning of His ministry. The students have Matthew chapters 1-8 due to be read by September 10. Also, this week we will be watching The Case for Christ. This movie is about an atheist who goes out to prove that Jesus didn’t exist, but accidentally proves He did!
7th grade English/ Reading
For Reading this week, we will read several mystery short stories. The objective is to decide who the better mystery writer is between Edgar Allan Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Several selections by each author will be read. We will read each one, put the clues together, and try to solve each case.
For English, the topic is the four types of sentences and synonyms. The students have vocabulary over synonyms due on Thursday.
8th grade English/ Reading
The student will put to use their knowledge of the six active reading strategies by reading our first short story. Our first story is The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The students will be given a project over the story on Monday. Also, this week we will start our first novel of the year. The novel we will read is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This wonderful book is about a young girl living in a post-apocalyptic world.

6th grade Reading/ English/ Spelling
The students will be given their first week of spelling on Monday. They will have a homework assignment due on Tuesday (p.44 in their Reader's & Wroter's notebook), and another spelling homework due on Wednesday(p.49 in their notebook). On Thursday we will play a review game to get ready for the test on Friday. Spelling words for the week: answered, answering, traveled, traveling, chopped, chopping, qualified, qualifying, panicked, panicking, interfered, interfering, omitted, omitting, magnified, magnifying, patrolled, patrolling, skied, skiing
For Reading, we will be reading historical fiction. We will be reading a short selection from Fred Gipson’s novel Old Yeller. We will discuss what makes up historical fiction before we get into our first novel Dovey Coe by Frances O’Roarke Dowell. This fast paced novel is about a country girl who gets blamed for a crime she did not commit.
For English this week, we will review the parts of speech and the different types of sentences.
6th grade Social Studies
We will begin our study of the many countries of the world by looking at the greatest country of the all: The United States! The focus will be on the geography, economy, people, and government of our country. Also, we will be reviewing how to locate places on a map by using latitude and longitude. There will be several questions about latitude and longitude on our first chapter test. However, our first test isn’t scheduled for a couple of weeks!
