Bible: Update coming Tuesday. Bible test is Friday!
Phonics/Spelling: We will focus on long vowel sounds with the "sneaky" e. There will be both a spelling and phonics test on Friday. They SHOULD study for the spelling test, however the phonics test is an application assessment that cannot be studied for. Homework for spelling includes sentences on Monday that are due by Wednesday; and 10 times each for words spelled incorrectly on Wednesday's pretest. Pretest is Wednesday, Final Test is Friday.
This week's words are:
page nose space size fine mice late huge blaze race rice vote
High Frequency words
move live
Writing Conventions/Workshop: We will be learning about subjects of sentences. Our writing this week will focus on expository paragraphs (this means that we will work on writing that explains about a non-fiction topic). We will also have a daily editing practice that will come home each day after we have checked them.
Math: This week we will assess Chapter 1 and begin Chapter 2 on Addition facts. Please practice their math facts with them at home. Flash cards, computer/DS math games, rapid fire (Where you ask them facts like 5+5 and they answer 10 - this is a GREAT game for the car. :) ), practice worksheets or booklets that you either make up yourselves or you can get an inexpensive one from Walmart, the Dollar store, or the book store. Math facts are a crucial foundation for nearly all of mathematics and it is important for the children to have these facts memorized and get away from counting on their fingers. We will also start each morning with Daily Math Practice that will come home with your child each Friday after we have checked the problems together.
Social Studies: We will be discussing different groups, leaders of groups, and why we have rules and why they are important.
Guided Reading: We have spent most of our reading time in whole group study. Our goal is to begin meeting with small groups this week after our baseline assessments, however, due to time constraints and getting a feel for our new curriculum, we may not be able to achieve this goal. Our classroom library has lots of books at the students reading level. They are welcome to borrow these books as long as they return them promptly. Don't forget to have them record their reading time on their reading log. We are checking these daily.
