3rd Grade Webpage - Ms. Koch

Welcome to Miss Koch's Web Page August 30, 2010

Bible:  See the Bible letter in the home folder for a detailed account of what we will be studying, then you can discuss it at home.  The memory verse is written on a yellow paper in the folder, and it is on the letter as well.  They need to practice it each day, and Friday will be the memory test.  Today, they have a paper with a map at the top.  They can write the verse for practice at the bottom, and then say it a couple of times.  This will count as Bible practice homework.

Spelling:  The phonic element we will study this week is double consonants in the middle.  There is a spelling list with these types of words, some easy high frequency words, and a few challenge words that will help them in math.  The sentence has four words from the list in it, and I will dictate it on Wednesday and Friday for the pretest and the post test.

There is also a paper with spelling exercises that they started.  It can be finished for homework.  It is relatively easy as well if directions are read.  I went over the directions in class.  There will be a spelling practice sheet sent home each day until the test.

Reading:  We will start the new reading program-Unit 1 this week.  They will bring the Reading text home to finish reading or reread the story Charlie McButton  . . . .  The following important vocabulary will be highlighted in yellow:  vision, bat, battery, plug, fuel, term, blew These are homonyms which are words with different meanings depending on the context.  You could start discussing these words this week.

They will be allowed to bring home class independent reading books, but any book, especially the textbook, has to be brought back daily.  An independent book can be taken home daily until it is finished.

Math: We started ordinal numbers and place value today.  We will eventually work up to 100,000 by next week.  They will start bringing a worksheet to do to review the day's lesson.  One side will be titled  "Reteach" with an explanation and example, and the other side will be titled "Homework."  There are not a lot of problems.  Please check over these papers in particular to see if they are getting the concept.

Writing:  Depending on how much of the Reading lessons we get done, we will start practicing writing proper, detailed sentences and eventually practice paragraph writing in subsequent weeks.  I will check with the Taiwan teacher and see if she is interested in pen pal letters.  They will be writing sentences for spelling homework this week.  I will explain to them that the sentences cannot be short and choppy like first grade.  They will get examples of detailed sentences using the spelling words.

Social Studies:  I am not sure we can start the unit this week.  I am taking longer introducing each subject and procedures.  I will spend more time this week on getting into the reading program which will integrate Social Studies and Science concepts.  The first S.S unit will be about communities.
